fungibility – How do NFT services prevent copied NFTs?

I couldn’t find a suitable exchange for this question, so I hope this question is appropriate.

Say I take a very common image that anyone could find via a search engine and “turn it into” an NFT, what steps do NFT services take to prevent someone else doing the same thing with the same image?

I can imagine you could take basic steps such as comparing hashes of input to those already minted by others. Is the onus largely on the owner of the IP?
